On February 27th, 2025 the Centre for European Studies organized the kick-off of the Jean Monnet Centre of Excellence in European Studies: Democracy, Human rights and Security – DeHuRiS.
The event started with the welcome and opening speeches by the director of the Centre, Dr Vladimir Martirosyan and the Rector of the Yerevan State University, Dr Hovhannes Hovhannisyan and the presentation CES history, vision and activities.
The first part concluded with the presentation of Ms Kristine Gevorgyan regarding DeHuRIS project aim, objectives, work packages, cooperation prospects and foreseen activities.
The second part of the event was devoted to a panel discussion on “Advancing Democracy, Human rights and Security in Armenia amidst regional turmoil” that was moderated by Head of Research Unit at CES Dr Arusyak Aleksanyan.
The Panelists were Samvel Mkrtchyan, Head of the European Department, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Beniamin Poghosyan, Senior Research Fellow, APRI Armenia and Johnny G. Melikian, Senior Research Fellow, Orbeli Center. During the discussion the panelists tackled the regional geopolitical situation with special emphasis on Armenia and Georgia, issues of democracy and security and the prospects of Armenia’s EU integration. The panel concluded with a series of Q&A.
The Kick-off was attended by the university staff, representatives of embassies, NGOs, think tanks and students.
